EIUG MEMBERSHIP

It is the belief of certain large energy intensive consumers that vigorous economic growth, of which industrial growth is a major component, is the only viable long term strategy for sufficient job creation and effective and lasting redress of socio-economic imbalances in South Africa.   A healthy and effective energy industry is essential to the long term economic growth and social well-being of all South Africans.

The health and effectiveness of the energy industry can be enhanced by active involvement, engagement and participation in energy-related activities which have a bearing on the business of energy intensive consumers and by co-operation with other stakeholders.   A strong synergy on energy-related matters between energy intensive consumers will allow for a common vision on the future of the energy sector.

Certain large energy intensive consumers, in order to realise such synergy, have decided to associate themselves in an association now known as the Energy Intensive Users Group of Southern Africa (EIUG).

The EIUG presently has 36 Members whose combined electricity consumption is approximately 44% of the electricity sales in South Africa. Membership comprises large industry in the fields of mining, materials beneficiation and materials manufacture.

EIUG Members are all direct consumers of electricity. EIUG members are by definition Contestable Consumers who operate sites which consume in excess of 100 GWh per annum. The EIUG operates through a committee which comprises members and deputies nominated by each of the voluntary member organisations.
